The Best Wordpress Blog Design

Defining the best Wordpress blog design is a bit subjective because it's down to personal taste and there are so many themes to choose from that it's all rather overwhelming.

If you can't decide on the look and feel that you want, start off by browsing the selection of themes at Wordpress.org - there are more than twelve hundred of them so you should be able to find something that you like.

You can use the search facility at Wordpress but it isn't very intuitive and turns up all sorts of themes unrelated to your search. Alternatively, you can use filter and tag which provides boxes for you to check related to colour, number of columns, width, features and subject. However, there are currently only three subjects to choose from.

Although there are so many to choose from, the best Wordpress blog theme for me would include the ability to change the header image at the very least. This is because I always feel that the header should have some relevance to the niche being targeted by the blog. For example, I don't feel that a sunset header image would be particularly suitable for a blog featuring baby clothes, much as I love sunsets.

While choosing your theme, try to put yourself into the shoes of your visitors. Most people like a nice design but fast loading and easy navigation usually come out as top priority.

Think about colours; your favourite colour may be lime green but others may not be so keen. Again, try to match the colour scheme to your topic. Be careful not to choose colours which are very pale for your text, unless you have a very dark background because the text will be very difficult to read. In fact blogs with very dark backgrounds and pale text are generally hard to read.

For me, the best Wordpress blog theme is Atahualpa. This theme has three columns but apart from that, nearly everything is customisable including images, colours, fonts, post formatting, the whole lot.

OK, so you've got your basic theme and a header image that fits with your niche, but you now have sidebars to populate. For this you use widgets from within the Wordpress admin area. There are all sorts to choose from, but try not to make your sidebars too cluttered, particularly with flashing adverts which can be very offputting and may make your visitors move on quickly.

The best Wordpress design suits the topic and isn't too busy and difficult to navigate.
